Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Jerry on the Hell's Angels (edit: sorry for the repeat)

From a thread over on "The Place That Shall Not Be Named" I was reminded of a documentary I saw recently on the Hell's Angels. The boys appear in a couple of spots: playing in Golden Gate and playing on a boat in NYC for a Hell's Angels event. My favorite though is a brief interview with Jerry about the Angels:

The Bo Diddly concert from the Academy of Music run was billed as Jerry Garcia and friends--a benefit for the Angels. I never understood that as the New York Angels would regularly harass and intimidate the patrons at the Fillmore East which was next door (almost) to their HQ.

Still, they seemed well behaved that night. No incidents. Lots of cops, and the other ticket holders kept their distance. Pretty creepy nonetheless.

Whenever I would see a group of them in the East Village, I would spit on their bikes before kicking them over. This is why when I sing "Them Bones" I sing "the neck bone connected to the thigh bone, the thigh bone connected to the shattered bone; the shattered bone connected to the dangling bone, the dangling bone connected to the metal rod, the metal rod connected to the head bone . . . .

imagine being at altamont with those crazy fuckers as security. i wouldn't have gone within 100 feet of that stage, even if the dead had played.

yeah, a blood bath to be sure. A bad combination really. First of all as I understand it there were a lot of non veteran/new recruits, then there was bad acid and booze and whatnot. I'm not saying anyone deserved those beatings but I've also heard there were quite a few fans that were trying to strike out thinking they could remain anonimous in the crowd. Can you believe Marty Balin though? Here you have this guy that sings some of the wimpiest love songs of all the SF bands and yet he's the ONE guy with the balls to jump in the crowd and start swinging.

I used to see Angels all the time in Oakland, in fact their headquarters were right next to a headshop we all went to. never had any run ins because I minded my own business. Or better yet compliment their bike and that was even better.

Friend of mine in Providence, RI had an apartment right across the street from clubhouse. It was in one of the crappier parts of town, but he said it was also the safest in the entire city (as long as you didn't fuck with the guys in leather).
